You can't tell a lot about the pictures,
but the bumpers were a little rough, behind the rear side windows had rust
from water leakage into the side vents, the window seals were in pretty
bad shape, the hood and left front fender had been mashed in by the previous
owner when he ran it into the tongue of his boat trailer. The hood would
not open. I got the hood open by tying a logging chain through the handle
of the hood and tying the other end to a tree, and then carefully backing
up to pull the dent out enough so it would open. It worked like a charm!

The engine ran pretty good, but it smoked
bad, spraying oil into the engine compartment everywhere, and ran through
spark plugs pretty often during the first winter we had it. So the next
spring, we found a guy in a neighboring town that did restoration work
on Beetles. He had a complete engine just sitting there, and I bought it
for $200.00 and installed it. It ran a little better and didn't smoke quite
as bad, and at least it didn't spray oil everywhere. This also allowed
me to rebuild the original engine later without feeling like I had to be
in a hurry to do so.

We had originally wanted to rebuild
the original engine before we did any paint and body work, but the door
scraper seals were in bad need of replacement, letting water leak into
the door panels, and not wanting to put them on until after it was repainted,
we started with the body and interior, to keep from having any further
rain damage.
